Schedule & Supply List
Week of Oct. 4-8
MONDAY, Oct. 4
READING
Manga Comics
http://www.afterschooltreats.com/wfdata/frame1346-1205/pressrel12.asp
Japanese comics are short on word counts, but long on illustration power. Your
students will enjoy transforming regular stories or book plots into manga form.
They're even converting Shakespeare to manga . . . but that's a little extreme.
Snack: rice cakes, hot green tea
Supplies: plain paper; thin, medium and thick black and gray markers; books and
stories
TUESDAY, Oct. 5
WRITING
Neighborhood Poem
http://www.afterschooltreats.com/wfdata/frame1227-1170/pressrel12.asp
Take an "observation walk" around the neighborhood, and write your
impressions of what you see, hear, touch, feel and think. Then create
a free-verse poem. Mount it with original illustrations, or a collage.
Then contact your neighborhood association officials, city officials, or a
local restaurant or store, to share these with others.
WEDNESDAY, Oct. 6
MATH
Money Math: It "Coin-ts"
http://www.afterschooltreats.com/wfdata/frame1218-1160/pressrel1.asp
Times change . . . technology changes . . . politics change . . . and money
makes the world go 'round. THAT will never change! Make sure your students
have practice at making change, an essential and basic math skill.
Snack: long carrot, knife (with adult supervision!), ranch dressing, fruit
juice
Supplies: 5 small cardboard boxes; masking tape or duct tape; at least
five each of quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies; four $1 bills and one
$5 bill, or scrap paper to make play money; scrap cardstock or paper,
pencil
THURSDAY, OCT. 7
HISTORY
The History of Money
http://www.afterschooltreats.com/wfdata/frame1218-1160/pressrel3.asp
This is a three-part activity: read an online report about the history of
money; select one topic or point to zero in on, and write a paragraph about it
in your own words, and then plan and create a visual aid to help communicate
the point to an audience. (This may develop as a two-day activity, since the
students won't know what supplies they need to make their visual aid until
they've read the report)
Snack: cooked rice and soy sauce, cooked yam and brown sugar, deli cheese cube
and cracker, apple juice
Supplies: paper, pen or pencil, and visual aid supplies (may have to be a
second-day completion, with students and/or staff bringing in needed supplies)
FRIDAY, OCT. 8
ART
Henri Matisse: Colorful Paper Cutouts
http://www.afterschooltreats.com/wfdata/frame1201-1142/pressrel7.asp
Who's more fun than the artist Henri Matisse? Who's more vibrant, more
exciting, more captivating? Your students will love imitating his
"wild" style with simple, graphic paper art.
Snack: cookie cutterts, bread, bologna, cheese, lettuce
Supplies: brightly-colored paper or cardstock, scissors, gluesticks
